I'm looking for a roomate... to move into a 2b/2b apt of our choice, preferably close to USF, at the end of April. Male/female gay/stright oesn't matter to me. I'm pretty easy to deal with, and i tend to be quite laid back. I had plans ot leave the state, but they fell through so now i have to find place to live, and a roomate to live with by the end of my current lease.

Who wants to step-up their mentoring in the fall?

Is this you?:
So you wanted to be a mentor so you could actually come in handy, help international students, and make their lives easier, but all you really seem to be doing is talking with them on the phone and hanging out with them periodically. You wish you could do more, but you have no idea where to start. You don't know what your mentee needs and feel weird asking them. Or they've told you what they need and you don't know how to help them. The president (me) never gave you instructions, so it's hard to know whether you're actually doing a good job or not.

Yesterday I met with a woman from ISSS, and she had a wonderful suggestion. She wants to organize a system, where volunteers (you) will talk to international students coming next semester online and/or over the phone, and get to know them before they even come to Tampa. Then, you'll start helping them as soon as they arrive, rather than after school has already started. You'll be helping them with the hard new-kid stuff that they actually need help with, like getting set up in their dorms or apartments, registering for classes, buying food plans, buying furniture, finding their way around USF as well as Tampa, et cetera. Stuff that, in previous semesters, they had to learn themselves before you even met them.
Now, you can still be a normal mentor if you want. We'll still need those. It's more fun and not as stressful. This system is only for people who are going to be responsible, and preferably who have a car, although that's not a requirement. If anybody's interested in this for fall semester please let me know at usfamp@usa.com ASAP. This is something you'll have to sign up for, we'll have a couple of meetings to make sure everything's clear, and after that you'll be held accountable for holding up your end of the bargain.

I think this is a really cool idea. What do you guys think?

Happy Birthday to Fatima!
This Thursday is Fatima's birthday, and some of us are going out to dinner. Fatima's a more-the-merrier kind of chick so I thought I'd make the announcement. If anybody wants to come, let me know and you can be my tagalongs.
We're meeting in front of the Marshal Center at 7:30 on Thursday night.

Just forwarding this on...
Hey fellow AMPers,

The night parade is coming up on February 12th. I went to the parade last year and had an awesome time! The parade is at 6 p.m., but we should get there early so we can have a good spot and we don't really have to deal with traffic. We can meet in front of the library at 3:15pm, so we can leave around 3:30pm. If you don't want to be there so early, and if you have rides then you can meet us at Ybor. After the parade we can go into some clubs.

Email me back if you have questions or call me 727-481-0703.

When: Sat. Feb. 12, 3:15pm
Where: Library
Cost: Free, except if you want to go into clubs

Hi,my name is Stacy. I live in the USF area, though I am not a student of the university. I was curious as to how I would go about getting help with booking a celeb. lecture at the USF campus in Tampa that would be open to the public.
I was recently in contact with Ruthie Alcaide, of The Real World "Hawaii".She gave me her agent's contact info.( www.worldwidetalentgroup.com )after speaking with her agent (Brian Monaco) I was informed that USF has hosted other Real World cast mates as recently as Feb.04.

Ruthie's lectures consist of issues such as diversity, sexuality, and overcoming addiction.(both drug and alcohol) She really covers all the bases, providing information that is pertinent to not only the students of USF but the general public as well.

Please comment back with any thoughts or ideas as to how I can make this a real possiblity.
Thank You,

Pizza Party this Friday!
Date: Friday, January 21st
Time: 7:30PM
Place: Cooper Hall, room #459

Hey guys, this is a great opportunity to meet all the other members and start off the semester, especially if you're new. You might even meet the person that you want to be your mentee/mentor. If not, don't trip, because I'm just going to assign people together this weekend, after the party. That's my weekend mission. :)
If you can't make it to the pizza party, don't worry about it. Just keep an eye on your inbox for a little notification on who your mentee/mentor is, and of course, there's always thing next group event, which I believe will be a camping trip. That's Melissa's (the new prez) baby, though, so I know little about it.

New Semester! Weee!
Okay, so Sherry, Melissa and I all just finished meeting with Catherine, and now we have a fun big to-do list that we need your help with! I'll only list the stuff that affects you guys:

Item #1: Attention all mentors living in Tampa! We need an emergency mentor for a nice young Palestinian man named Ziad. He just recently arrived in the United States and needs someone who knows their way around pretty well, has a car, and is available before the beginning of Spring semester. Please e-mail me at jstaples@mail.usf.edu by the end of this week if you're interested! Thanks!

Item #2: Another international orientation is coming up on January 5th, and we've been asked to do a couple of skits for the new students. One's about health insurance, and the other's about culture shock. If you want to volunteer to act, even if you act badly, please contact me (@ above e-mail), or Sherry (syrinx) or even Melissa if you have her e-mail anywhere. Again, by the end of the week would be great, but we're desperate so we'll probably take you last minute, too.

Item #3: I'm starting an AMP online photo album, so if you have photos from events, parties, etc, please e-mail them to me.

Item #4: Melissa is now the official new president of the American Mentor's Program (trumpets cheer). If only we could get her to start a frickin' livejournal. Hmmm...
I remain Vice President, only this time it's official. Catherine wrote it down and everything. If you're interested in any other kind of officer work like secretary or treasurer let one of us know, and we'll think of something for you to be in charge of. :)

Also be on the lookout for e-mails from any of the three of us, announcing the first event of the spring semester!

That is all,
~~Vice Fearless Leader

Let's get this party started
Okay, this Friday, Dec. 10, I'm having a AMP/graduation party at my and Karolina's apartment.

You all are invited! If you need directions, e-mail me at sherry@sherrymims.com!

Bring your own alcohol (some beer will be provided) and your favorite foreign movies or music.

This is my last hurrah, so be there or be square :)

PS. You guys need to start updating this community, too. What will you ever do without me? Mwahaha

End of Semester Bash
Okay, I want to do something big and fun to end this semester.

Got any ideas on what we should do? I'm leaning toward having a Foreign Film Night like we had last semester, but I'm open to anything...

"International Night" anyone?
Anyone in our lovely new AMP community want to go out on Wednesday to Bahasa Lounge's "International Night?" Even though it's called international, they play mostly Arabic music, which I love. They have a bellydancer, a hookah...and, trust me, lots of international people :)

Anyone want to go? I think we'll leave around 11 pm.

From the president
Hi everybody,
I'm Sherry. I like horror movies and long walks on the beach...oops, wrong community :)

Anyway, I have always been interested in cultural things, but I never really got serious about it until I met my lovely friend Milena about five years ago. Since then, I've tried to befriend as many international students as possible. I found out about AMP through the USF student handbook and knew immediately it was for me.

I think this will be a good place to post events and questions, and it definitely doesn't have to only be about AMP. I would imagine it would be a great place to meet fellow accent-loving people, talk about world events...and anything else we want!

I speak some Spanish and a little Hebrew. I want to get more fluent. I've been to Spain and France, and I hope I get to go back to Spain sometime soon.

In addition to me and Jess, I know these people are "official" members of AMP:

I know we aren't allowed to pimp out communities on either u_southflorida or usfbulls, but maybe we can ask? What do you think, jessikanesis? I think we should ask because at the beginning of the school year, it'll be much easier to get people to click on over to this community than to bother e-mailing us...

EDIT: How could I forget associate member sessobunny and the very cool xhate_destroysx? MEA CULPA!

First post! Weeeee.....!
Okay, just for the sake of not having an empty page anymore, I'm going to give the first entry:

Hi, my name's Jess, and I'm a sophmore anthropology major at the Tampa campus of USF. I love cultural classes and hate math-y classes. I understand some French and am currently taking Arabic I. I have never been outside the country except to Canada, and even then it wasn't anywhere cool in Canada. I moved here from Massachusetts a year and a half ago, and I didn't know anyone in the whole STATE, let alone in the University. I'm very grateful to have joined the AMP, because I know most of my current friends through this club. I know there are quite a few members that have livejournals, and I WILL FIND YOU. Mwa-ha-ha. Right now it's just Sherry (the prez!) and I, but I have not yet started the hunt.

And FYI: Just because this is an AMP community, doesn't mean we can only talk about AMP. That would just be silly. Feel free to discuss anything (appropriate) here, from classes/movies/dating to politics/culture/religion. You can also post in any language you are comfortable with, but keep in mind more people will understand you if you type in English. It's all up to you.

So, have fun! Play nice, and I hope you talk to you all soon!
